Preliminary findings from a German hearing company appear to have found a correlation between where you live and your level of hearing loss. According to early reports, it is looking like noise pollution in urban areas is causing some people to experience hearing loss at the level of 10 or 20 years beyond their actual age. You can read more about the study at https://mimi.io/en/hearingindex/ or watch an eye opening video at https://vimeo.com/204201482.
Now this doesn’t mean if you are living in a booming metropolis that you need to run out and immediately find yourself a home in the country. However, it is worth taking a moment to consider the steps you are taking to protect your hearing from noise pollution. You can find quiet places to spend some of your time regardless of where you live. This can be more difficult if you live among the bustle of cars and buses, sirens, and other constant sounds of metropolitan neighborhoods. Even then, it may be just as simple as finding a time during the day where you can sit quietly and read while wearing earplugs or noise cancelling headphones.
We can’t always be in the most optimal places to avoid noise pollution, but we can always take action to do the best with what we have.
