In the seven years that I have worked for CaptionCall, I have often heard people lament how they wish CaptionCall had been around while their parents or grandparents had been alive. They believe CaptionCall would have improved the quality of life for their loved ones. I often wonder how my own grandparents might have benefited from CaptionCall. My thoughts also turn to Mary, a neighbor who passed away a number of years ago who had severe hearing loss.
My wife and I met Mary when after we got married and moved into a quaint little 1950’s rambler built in a suburb of Salt Lake City. Mary lived across the street and we got to know her during our time in that neighborhood. She was about 90 years old, a widow and lived alone. We enjoyed the time we spent with Mary. We made a point to visit her every holiday and she would always have a treat or toy for our young son. One evening we invited Mary along with a couple other widows to dinner at our home and it was a very memorable, almost magical night as these ladies spent hours reminiscing about life during World War II and the jobs they had during the war.
Mary was very kind and enjoyed interactions with friends and neighbors, however it was apparent that she could not hear us very well. She generally could hear and understand my voice much better than my wife, I can only assume she had more difficulty with high frequencies. I know she often struggled to hear what we were saying. Conversations with individuals with hearing loss can be frustrating both for them and for you. I wish I knew then what I know about hearing loss and I wish that I could have told Mary about CaptionCall. I am grateful that CaptionCall now exists to help individuals who are struggling with hearing loss stay connected with friends and family. I feel fortunate to work for CaptionCall and to have the opportunity to help people who have hearing loss.
CaptionCall is an ambassador for hearing health and an advocate for people with hearing loss. CaptionCall encourages people everywhere to actively manage their hearing health through regular hearing evaluations, and to seek early treatment when hearing loss is identified. CaptionCall is committed to helping people with hearing loss stay socially engaged for a longer, happier, healthier life
