Supporting Military Members Suffering from Hearing Loss

By CaptionCall

When some military troops return home, they may suffer from hearing loss created by noise exposure while serving. Hearing loss can create barriers for these troops reconnecting to society or family members. Noise-induced hearing loss is a serious problem that sometimes occurs after serving in the military. Almost every soldier, sailor, airman, or marine will be exposed to loud noises during training and missions. According to the National Institutes of Health, “noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus remain the second most prevalent service-connected disabilities. Much of the noise experienced by military personnel exceeds that of maximum protection achievable with double hearing protection.” In 2012, 15% of all veterans were affected by notable hearing loss.

High-noise exposure for military troops is inevitable. The general conditions of military training and service expose troops to conditions that may result in high noise-induced hearing loss if proper ear protection is not worn. Airforce personnel receive exposure in service helicopters and fighter planes; Navy troops receive exposure in engine rooms and carrier decks; and Army soldiers, Marines, and other infantry receive exposure through weapons and artillery. While high-noise hearing loss may be prevented, once it occurs, services like CaptionCall captioned telephone services become a lifeline for our military veterans.

This year, in support of our military servicemen and servicewomen impacted by hearing loss, CaptionCall has teamed up with Lifetime’s Military Makeover with Montel to provide captioned telephone service for veterans suffering from noise-induced hearing loss.

“We recognize the sacrifices our troops make while protecting and serving our country. That is why we are proud to partner with Montel Williams to provide a support our military veterans on the home front.” - Cameron Tingey, Chief Customer Officer of CaptionCall.
