Trying to save on health care costs as you age? You may want to have your hearing checked. A recent 10 year study showed that adults with untreated hearing loss spent an average of 46% more in total health care costs than those with treated hearing loss. For the participants of the study this was an average of an additional $22,434 in health care costs. On top of that “When the researchers calculated how much of the additional $22,434 in total health care costs were likely due solely to hearing loss-related services, the total was only about $600 over 10 years.” Read more here: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/11/181108142334.htm
Though the study has yet to determine what the exact reason for this correlation, it is obvious that not treating your hearing loss is driving up your healthcare costs. The best way to avoid these costs is to get a hearing test. Being proactive is the best way to make sure you aren’t being adversely affected by hearing loss. The researchers found effects on health care costs as early as 2 years into the study. Acting on hearing loss early may help alleviate the financial burden of increased health costs.
