To state the obvious, the world is a quieter place for folks with untreated hearing loss. Did you know that the ‘quiet’ that hearing loss brings in itself may be causing additional damage to the ears? Massachusetts Eye and Ear researchers conducted a study on the effects of sound deprivation on adult mice. According to the study:“After a year of sound deprivation, we observed dramatic changes in the inner ear -- notably, a significant loss of the synaptic connections through which the sensory cells send their electrical signals to the brain.”What does this mean for those of us with hearing loss? It means we should not just endure, or learn to live with it, in hopes that it will get better. Just waiting and hoping could realistically lead to irreversible hearing loss. According to the study:“Data from the present study suggest that the auditory deprivation, in itself, damages the inner ear in ways similar to that seen in age-related and noise-induced hearing loss.”To read more visit: https://www.masseyeandear.org/news/press-releases/2015/11/sound-deprivation-leads-to-irreversible-hearing-lossTaking action is the best way to prevent further hearing loss.
