Blake Schapiro

Compliance Specialist

Q: Please describe your role in the company and why it is important.

A:  In my role as a compliance specialist, I provide our marketing and outreach teams the information and tools they need to remain compliant with FCC regulations. This role is important because here at CaptionCall, we operate within a highly regulated industry, and in order to continue providing our unmatched quality of service to Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, it is imperative we all understand and follow the federal regulations applicable to our respective roles.

Q: What do you bring to your role that adds value to the company?

A: I bring my love of regulatory policy to this role! Having recently graduated from the Scrivner Institute of Public Policy at the University of Denver, and with intentions of attending law school, this role provides me the opportunity to explore my passion for working within the complexities of federal regulatory policies.

Q: What does the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provide for people who are Deaf and hard-of-hearing?

A:  Among many other provisions, the ADA guarantees Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals the right to communicate by phone “in a manner that is functionally equivalent to the ability of a hearing individual.” The ADA was a revolutionary piece of legislation, and I am proud to be part of a company that is fulfilling one of the mandates established by this policy thirty years ago.

Q: Please describe how regulations (government rules) impact what we do as a company.

A: Federal regulations impact almost everything that we do at Sorenson Communications and CaptionCall. That is why compliance is a core value of our company.

Q: What is the greatest challenge you have overcome – or are still overcoming – in your work?

A: I am just a few days past my two-month-anniversary. That means, as the greenest member of the Compliance Department, familiarizing myself with all of the FCC policies (and many, many acronyms) related to our services has been the greatest challenge of my work thus far.

Q: What is the best part of your work?

A: Working alongside the incredibly knowledgeable, impressively dedicated members of our legal/compliance department is the best part of my work, hands-down.
